Getting to South Cowichan: ferries, roads and local transport
Plan the complete journey to your accommodation, including the parts after a mainland crossing or flight.
Begin with the whole route
Compare the mainland ferry or flight with the onward Island journey before booking. A convenient sailing time may lead to an inconvenient check-in if the terminal is far from your chosen base. Confirm rental-car pickup, accommodation arrival limits and meal options as part of the same decision.
Use BC Ferries for current routes, fares, service notices and booking rules. Different routes have different arrangements; avoid applying advice about one crossing to another.
Allow for the Malahat road journey
Travelling between Greater Victoria and South Cowichan can involve Highway 1 over the Malahat. Use DriveBC for current road conditions and incidents before departure and again when conditions warrant.
A drive-time estimate is not a connection guarantee. Leave margin for stops, traffic and the operator’s check-in requirements. Do not substitute unfamiliar minor roads merely because an app proposes a shorter delay.
Know what the Mill Bay ferry does
The Mill Bay–Brentwood Bay route crosses Saanich Inlet within the southern Island area; it is not a mainland crossing. BC Ferries currently lists it as non-bookable. Check the operator’s vehicle restrictions and service details before committing to it.

Check the last local connection
For travel without a car, use BC Transit’s Cowichan Valley schedules and trip planning for your actual day. Check both directions, any transfers and the walk at each end. A regional bus connection does not guarantee service to a rural B&B or trailhead.
Save the accommodation’s directions and an agreed arrival contact before travelling. Use the base comparison to keep transport and location decisions together.
