Where to stay in South Cowichan: choose your base
Compare a coastal village, a lake-area stay and a rural base before choosing an individual property.
Cowichan Bay or Mill Bay?
For a trip centred on village meals and a waterfront setting, investigate Cowichan Bay. Check the actual walking route from a property to the places you will use; a bay address does not guarantee a convenient pedestrian location.
Mill Bay can suit plans focused on Saanich Inlet and the southern approach to the region. If the ferry influences your choice, read our Mill Bay guide and verify the full onward journey. Avoid promising yourself a fixed connection based on a short crossing alone.
Shawnigan or the countryside?
The Shawnigan area fits an itinerary focused on the lake and Kinsol Trestle. Ask what lake access actually means: a view, shared shore access, a private dock and equipment use are different amenities.
Around Cobble Hill, a rural property may suit food visits and a quieter evening. Confirm how you will reach dinner and return after dark. Country accommodation is a setting, not a promise that shops or restaurants are within walking distance.
Ask questions that change the stay
For a B&B, check breakfast times, dietary needs, bathroom arrangements, stairs, quiet hours and arrival instructions. For a rental, ask about cooking facilities, cleaning charges, parking and the cancellation terms. Confirm pet or child policies directly.
