A South Cowichan weekend: forest, village, bay
A two-day outline that links the Kinsol Trestle, Shawnigan Lake and Cowichan Bay without trying to see the whole Island.
Day one: begin in the forest
Make Kinsol Trestle your main outing. The regional district directs public vehicle access to the south side, reached through Shawnigan Lake. Its approach is a walk, not a viewpoint beside the car: allow time for the journey out, the bridge and the return.
Afterwards, choose a meal in or around Shawnigan village. Add a short lakeside stop only if your group still wants to be outside. This gives the day a clear shape without turning every pause into a drive.
Day two: take the bay slowly
Use Cowichan Bay for a waterfront day: look at the village, check access to the Maritime Centre and leave room for lunch. A boat outing is a separate commitment. Confirm its departure point, duration and cancellation arrangements directly before building the day around it.
If your priority is food production, replace part of the village day with one prearranged winery or farm visit. Do not add several tasting appointments simply because they look close on a map.
Give arrival and departure some space
South Cowichan is reached by road within Vancouver Island; mainland arrivals usually involve a ferry or flight plus onward transport. Read our arrival guide before committing to a late check-in or an early mainland connection.
Keep the final morning near your accommodation if a ferry or flight is fixed. A pleasant breakfast is more useful than one last distant stop when the journey matters.
Choose the version that fits
